en.wikipedia.org In graphical computing, a desktop environment (DE) commonly refers to a particular implementation of graphical user interface (GUI) derived from the desktop metaphor that is seen on most modern personal computers. These GUIs help the user in easily accessing, configuring, and modifying many important and frequently accessed specific operating system (OS) features. The GUI usually does not afford access to all the many features found in an OS. Instead, the traditional command-line interface (CLI) is still used when full control over the OS is required in such cases. A desktop environment typically consists of icons, windows, toolbars, folders, wallpapers and desktop widgets (see Elements of graphical user interfaces and WIMP). A GUI might also provide drag and drop functionality and other features that make the desktop metaphor more complete. A desktop environment aims to be an intuitive way for the user to interact with the computer using concepts which are similar to those used when interacting with the physical world, such as buttons and windows. While the term desktop environment originally described a style of user interfaces following the desktop metaphor, it has also come to describe the programs that realize the metaphor itself. This usage has been popularized by the Common Desktop Environment and the K Desktop Environment.

Clement Lefebvre has announced the release of Linux Mint 12 “LXDE” edition, a fast and lightweight variant of the popular Ubuntu-based distribution. Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. I compined simple stuff and it turned out being something that would make you live the unique desktop experience which could feel a lot higher than mac os x, windows 7 or unity.. lets see how it went installing, 1)gnome-tweak-tool, gnome-shell-extensions and user-theme extension on gnome-tweak tool (advanced settings), edit “actions on titlebar right click” to minimize. 2) faiance-azur icon theme 3) zukitwo gtk theme after installing it, on gnome-tweak-tool click “Theme” and select icon theme as “faenza” then GTK + theme as zukitwo and window theme as adwaita (default for gnome 3) 4)Docky → after launching, right click on it and by settings change it to panel mode and change its hiding mode as: window dodge..add its docklets like bookmarks, workspace switcher, recent documents, clipboard and mounted volumes. → pinning most used applications on it. your docklets will appear on right and your pinned applications on left…well organized :) 5)Global Menu Details for some stuff… → Install gnome-tweak-tool with ubuntu software center → Installing gnome-gnome-shell-extensions and user-theme extension sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/gnome3 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-common sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme Installing Faience-Azur Icon Theme on terminal, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox sudo apt-get update with ubuntu software center chose the repository and install faience-azur icon theme.
